Scholarship Programs

We have some big news. We recently launched two scholarship programs to provide more than $85,000 and abundant opportunities to students across Philadelphia. Building on our ventures in the education space, such as our pioneering Experiential Learning Program (ELP) that brings innovative and exclusively student-run cafés to campuses across the country,  these new initiatives will support both Temple University and the Community College of Philadelphia.

The Saxbys Fellows Endowed Fund at Temple University will offer a $60,000 fund to help students achieve and exceed academic goals. We created the fund with our core values in mind, necessitating candidates meet specific criteria for consideration, including demonstrating a strong connection to community involvement.

“The backbone of this entire endeavor is our focus on social impact,” said Founder and CEO, Nick Bayer. “We’re fortunate to have incredible Higher Education partners who understand our commitment to providing opportunities will ultimately make quality education more accessible and affordable for students.“

We’ve had a decade-long philanthropic relationship with Temple. In 2018, we partnered to introduce an all-new ELP café on campus. Developed alongside Temple’s School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM), the cafe’s day-to-day operations – from financials to team development – are run exclusively by an STHM student, who is called the Student Café Executive Officer (SCEO). The SCEO is expected to execute at a professional level for all responsibilities during their six-month period in the café. These responsibilities include managing and developing their fellow peers into team leaders, fostering relationships with third-party community figures to strengthen social impact outreach, and presenting profit and loss statements to the Saxbys Executive Team once a month. In return, they receive mentorship, wages, bonus opportunities, and full credit for the semester.

The café’s grand opening, Pay-As-You-Wish event was met with a 100% match from Saxbys and raised the initial $14,000 towards the fund in a single day, making it the most successful Pay-As-You-Wish in company history.

Strengthening our charitable impact is our partnership with local nonprofit organization, the Maguire Foundation. Since aligning in November, the Foundation has generously contributed to multiple philanthropic efforts, including an additional $10,000 gift to the overall $60,000 for The Saxbys Fellows Endowed Fund at Temple University.

“STHM is excited to partner with Saxbys in the development of the Saxbys Fellows Endowed Scholarship. Students who have an interest in pursuing a career in hospitality management will be eligible for this scholarship,” said Jeremy Jordan, Associate Dean of STHM. “The creation of this scholarship is another example of the amazing partnership STHM has formed with Saxbys and how this relationship will benefit our students moving forward. I would like to thank Nick and his team for helping us to continue to support our students and provide meaningful experiential learning opportunities as part of their academic program.”

Further emphasizing our commitment to supporting education resources throughout Philadelphia is our fund for the Community College of Philadelphia. We started a Fellowship at the school to help students realize their full academic potential and recently donated more than $25,000 toward the program, $10,000 of which came from the Maguire Foundation. The contribution was raised through collective funds from Pay-As-You-Wish events spanning from the end of 2017 to the beginning of 2018.

“Our work with the Community College of Philadelphia deepens the overall impact we have across the community,” said Bayer, who serves on the College’s Foundation Board. “In that partnership lies the ability to affect a diverse group of students who may not have all the resources or accessibility they need to make their dreams a reality. It’s paramount that we don’t overlook their pursuits.”
