We partnered with local artist Sam Malpass, the creative mind behind @BadwayCreative, to paint the mural at our University of New Hampshire cafe. Sam works out of Rye Beach area, where she works with her sister to spread their work through murals, paintings and photography. The two also teach painting lessons for beginners at their studio.

Give us a little background on where your from and how you ended up in New Hampshire. 

I’ve been coming up to the seacoast of NH from CT for the summers since I was a youngin’. I started working surf lessons at Summer Sessions Surf Shop in Rye Beach and eventually never left.

You’re a well-traveled artist. How has seeing so many different cultures influenced your work?

Being submerged in different completely lifestyles and being forced out of my comfort zone turns my world upside-down. As my perspective changes, my views turn into different colors, new textures, interesting forms, and fresh ideas. All of this inspiration comes out in my artwork. 

You do many different styles of art: murals, photography, design, etc. What is your favorite and why?

I think all of these things go hand in hand but there is nothing like the freedom and impulsiveness of painting. 

What do you look for in your art? What are you trying to convey?

I hope to create an ambiance in the room that holds my work.The major goal is to make people feel something.

You also teach art classes for beginners with your sister via your business, Seaside Art Lessons**. What made you want to do that? 

“I can’t even draw a stick figure!” is a quote Charly (my sister) and I get regularly. When the simple fact is everyone is capable of using their right brain, they just haven’t tapped into it yet! We break down a painting into a step by step form and color process that gives our students a small glimpse inside of our personal techniques. It is very rewarding watching people discover what they are capable of. 

How has the New Hampshire community played a role in your career?

I’m grateful to be apart of a community that is so open to creativity. There is a rich mix of different visionaries that continue to inspire myself and the state through their varying crafts.
